Artisan – Concrete Coatings Growth

Artisan Business – From Murals to Concrete Coatings
An independent artist was scraping by with custom murals for public and private spaces. His income swung dramatically month to month, and he couldn’t afford to hire a crew or scale. Each project was high-hassle, low-profit, and dependent on client approvals that drained energy and limited growth.
Through consulting, I uncovered a hidden opportunity: the artist’s passion for aesthetic improvement and his natural process-oriented, detail-driven mindset could transfer into a booming, high-margin trade--concrete coatings.
We researched the market and built a new business model. I guided him through:
  • Securing a contractor’s license.
  • Launching with high-profit, repeatable epoxy garage floors marketed to upscale homeowners.
  • Developing a marketing campaign emphasizing artistry and custom solutions over “one-size-fits-all” products.
  • Crafting a bulletproof contract and compliance processes to protect against the industry’s high liability risks.
  • Pursuing advanced training and certifications across multiple coating systems.
The true breakthrough came in the sales process. The old approach—measuring, quoting, waiting—converted only 15% of prospects. I replaced it with a one-hour consulting call where prospects measured their own projects, received same-day ballpark pricing, and were asked for a deposit and installation date upfront. This flipped the dynamic: clients sold themselves, and the close rate rose to 99%.
Result: Within 12 months, the artist grew from $3K/month to steady $12K–$55K months (averaging $22K) at ~94% profit margins. He was featured in trade magazines, won industry awards, and ran a lean, highly profitable $350K+ cashflow business. Most importantly, he built a business that reflected his identity--artist first, product master second—delivering unique, tailored solutions instead of commodity installations.
